ABILENE – Second-ranked Chapman University swept a doubleheader against McMurry University Saturday to complete a three-game series sweep at the Walt Driggers Field. The Panthers took the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 10-7 before completing the sweep with a 11-5 win in the nightcap.
Chapman improves to 4-2 on the year with the wins. Meanwhile, McMurry drops to 0-3. McMurry returns to action next Thursday, Feb. 12, when they host Methodist University for a 2 p.m. start time at Driggers Field.
In game one, McMurry got on the board first as
Blake Nichols nailed a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second innings. But Chapman responded with four runs in the top of the third to take the lead.
The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the fourth when McMurry scored two runs to make it a 4-3 ballgame.
Jordan Brown singled with one out, which enabled
Derek Saltzgaber to score from second base. Then with two outs in the inning,
Gerad Morris reached on an error by Chapman leftfielder John Semel, which allowed
Jake Mullin to score from third.
But Chapman again responded with four runs in the top of the fifth to blow the game open and take a commanding 8-3 lead. Chapman added one run in the sixth and another one in the eighth, while McMurry countered with two runs in the sixth and two more runs in the eighth, but McMurry's comeback effort wasn't quite enough as Chapman took the game.
McMurry out hit Chapman in game one of the doubleheader, 13-10. But McMurry's defense proved costly as they committed three errors, which allowed four unearned runs to score.
Jordan Sigman got the win in the first game as he pitched seven innings and only gave up four earned runs and 10 hits. Sigman also struck out nine and only walked one batter.
Dakota Smith took the loss as he went four innings and surrendered four earned runs on five hits. Smith also struck out three and walked two.
In game two, Chapman jumped out to a 3-0 lead as the Panthers scored three in the top of the second. McMurry responded with two runs in the fourth, but Chapman matched those runs in the fifth as the Panthers put two more runs on the scoreboard to hold a 5-2 lead after five innings of play.
McMurry scored one in the sixth but Chapman again responded as they scored three more runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-3 lead. The Panthers then scored one run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to lead 11-3 going into the bottom of the ninth. McMurry mustered two runs in the final half inning to finish out the scoring.
Richard Matamoros got the win in game two as he went seven innings and only surrendered three earned runs off of seven hits. He also struck out four and walked three.
Kyle Martin took the loss and he went six innings and gave up five runs off of five hits. Martin struck out four and walked three.
