The Trinity Tigers rallied back from an 8-2 deficit and beat McMurry 9-8 in an in-region contest Tuesday at E.M. Stevens Field. Trinity put up four runs in the seventh and posted three more in the eighth while holding McMurry scoreless in the final three innings to improve to 18-8 on the season and drop McMurry to 15-11.
Kevin Jackson and Jeff Claydon hit back-to-back RBI singles in the eighth to tie and then give the Tigers the lead respectively. McMurry starter Cory Davis allowed six runs on six hits. Davis pitched into the seventh inning when he was caught in a jam. He struck out the first hitter and walked the second before giving up three straight singles and allowing a run cutting the lead to 8-3.
Aaron Wood came in relief with the bases loaded and one out. He retired the first hitter before giving up two hits that scored Davis' three runners. Derek McBride then took over the reins on the mound for McMurry and forced a groundout to end the inning, but the Tigers had cut the lead to two runs.
In the eighth, McBride surrendered all three of the Tigers' runs and picked up his first loss of the season. Clint Johnston prevented any further damage from Trinity, however, McMurry's offense was silent the final three innings.
Derek David hit his team-leading 11th home run of the year in McMurry's 4-run sixth inning. Gerad Morris added an RBI single earlier and the four runs gave McMurry a comfortable 8-2 lead. However, Trinity's offense came alive and the Tigers were able to hand McMurry its fourth loss in the past five games.
McMurry has had a roller coaster season thus far. After a 2-5 start, the team won 12 of its next 14 games before dropping four of its last five to move to 15-11. McMurry will try get back on the upswing this weekend in a 3-game series with American Southwest Conference West Division Opponent Schreiner. The teams will play a single game Friday at 7 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
During the series, McMurry will be honoring all three ASC Championship teams from the 1998, 2001 and 2004 seasons.
