Hardin-Simmons holds off McMurry rally to win, 3-2

Box Score

McMurry fought back from nine points down in the fourth game to force a deciding fifth game against Hardin-Simmons. However, the Cowgirls took the momentum back and won the fifth game 15-7 and took a 3-2 victory Wednesday night at Kimbrell Arena.

McMurry was trying to avenge its only American Southwest Conference West Division loss of the season. Hardin-Simmons defeated McMurry Sept. 19 3-1 at HSU's Mabee Complex. The victory wasn't as easy this time, but both matches the Cowgirls started out with a two-games-to-none lead.

HSU won 30-21, 30-28, 26-30, 30-32, 15-7 and the Cowgirls had two players in double figures on the offensive end. Amanda Mace and Chelsea Buetow led the offensive unit with 14 and 13 kills respectively. Kaela Parnell and Megan Lawrence added nine apiece. HSU setter Amanda Curry had a solid game with 44 assists, 11 digs and six kills.

McMurry led defensively with 13 blocks compared to the Cowgirls' nine. Terah Brown, who is ranked No. 21 in the NCAA Division III in blocks entering into Wednesday night's match, had five solo blocks and an assist.

However, the struggle for McMurry was its hitting percentage and service errors. The team hit .098 and had 15 service errors. Four McMurry players did manage double figures in the attacks category. Brown led with 15, Mandie Moore had a season-high 14, Danielle Kelton had 12 and Erica English added 11. Shannon Higgins posted 47 assists and Sarah Anding led defensively with 26 digs.

McMurry falls to 16-5 overall and 8-2 in the ASC West while Hardin-Simmons improved to 18-5 overall and 10-0 in conference play.

McMurry's played its final home match Wednesday and the Cowgirls snapped its seven-match win streak at Kimbrell Arena. McMurry returns to the floor Friday and Saturday at the Austin College Tournament in Sherman.
