Hall of Honor
Fichera was among the sparkplugs that breathed new life into the McMurry baseball program after a 47-year absence. When Lee Driggers was hired at McMurry to start the program in 1996, he recruited several players that helped the team become immediately successful, but perhaps none more decorated than Fichera.
He was the American Southwest Conference Player of the Year in 1998, a three-time all-ASC first-team selection, and was a first-team all-American in 1998. He helped McMurry to the first of its four ASC Championships and NCAA National Tournament appearances as a junior in 1998. Although McMurry didn’t compete in the NCAA in baseball in its first year back in 1996; Fichera points to Feb. 13, 1996 as one of his greatest memories. McMurry along with Fichera beat Wayland Baptist in the first baseball game for the school since 1948 and he recorded four hits and the first stolen base in the McMurry modern era that day. He remains among McMurry’s all-time leaders in stolen bases, games played, and hits.
Fichera graduated in May of 2000 with a degree in accounting and went on to receive his CPA.
