Michael McCarroll has been a staple within McMurry's track and field program since 2016, but took on a more involved role with the University in July 2022 as he was named the Director of Wellness and Recreation and Assistant Track & Field Coach.
McCarroll, a 2020 graduate of McMurry, spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as a scholar-athlete before taking on the role of student assistant coach for 2019 and 2020. After graduation, McCarroll stayed on as a volunteer assistant and served that role until his promotion in 2022.
Since his days as a pole vaulter for the War Hawks, he's coached a number of events and has aided McMurry's recruiting efforts. McCarroll was also instrumental in the hosting a number of home events at Wilford Moore Stadium, including the 2022 American Southwest Conference Championships, by managing and coordinating much of the set-up and planning.
With McCarroll on staff, McMurry has won five conference championships and five ASC Coaching Staff of the Year awards - including a sweep of the men's and women's titles in 2021 and 2022. McCarroll also had a hand in McMurry's 2017 conference title as a scholar-athlete.
As a coach, McCarroll has work with a number of national championship-caliber athletes, including Kelby Tidwell, the ASC High Point Athlete who picked up pole vault in just over a year of training. She not only appeared in her first pole vault national championship as a senior, but also won back-to-back pole vault championships in the conference. Tidwell also set the ASC record in the heptathlon, which also falls under McCarroll's coaching duties. In 2022, McCarroll's areas of pole vault and combined events totaled 43 points on both the men's and women's side at the ASC meet.
Outside of McMurry, McCarroll has coached pole vault and other events at the high school and college levels within the state of Texas. He is USATFÂ Level 1 certified and owns a USTFCCCA Generalist certification.
McCarroll and his wife, Baylee, reside in Abilene.
