Chris Breaux

The McMurry University Tennis program announced a coaching change on June 24, 2020, promoting assistant coach and former McMurry standout Chris Breaux to the position of head coach. Breaux enters his fourth season at the helm in 2023-24. Through three seasons, he owns an 18-35 men's head coaching record, including a 7-8 mark in conference games. The women's program has compiled a 22-30 record overall and an 8-6 listing in league play.

In 2021-22, the women's program placed five players on all-conference or all-division teams and finished with a run to the American Southwest Conference semifinals. Meanwhile, the men's team made back-to-back conference tournament appearances in 2021 and 2022 under Breaux's direction.

In his first season as head coach in Spring 2021, Breaux led the men's and women's tennis programs to a pair of American Southwest Conference semifinal appearances with quarterfinal wins over LeTourneau. Additionally, the War Hawks had two ASC West Division Most Valuable Player award winners in Carlos Martinez and Claire Hillyer under Breaux's leadership.

Also in his first season, Breaux guided doubles duo Carlos Martinez and Chase Daniell to the NCAA Division III National Championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Martinez also competed as a singles competitor and won his first round match before falling in the Round of 16. Martinez/Daniell also finished in the Top 16 and were the top-ranked team in the West Region.

After an outstanding career with the War Hawks in his own right, McMurry University Tennis welcomed Breaux back to the fold to serve as assistant coach for the 2018-19 season. Breaux was reunited with former McM teammate Bryan Rainwater, who assumed the head coach duties in the summer of 2018.

Breaux assisted in Carlos Martinez and Chase Daniell winning the ITA Southwest Regional in the fall of his second season, and helped the McM women off to an 8-4 start in the spring of 2020 before the remainder of the season was canceled.

In his first season as an assistant, Carlos Martinez and Chase Daniell were named second team All-ASC in doubles. For the McM women, the War Hawks posted a winning mark of 10-9, 4-2 ASC and qualified for the ASC Tournament. Four players earned spots on the All-ASC teams.

Breaux coached at Clack Middle School for three years prior to his arrival back on campus. He also spent three years as a counselor at the Baylor University Tennis Camp and has been a part of McMurry’s Tennis Camp for nearly a decade.

Breaux played four seasons (2010-14) in the Maroon & White. He amassed a career record of 47-30 in singles and was 57-27 in doubles, including a 39-23 mark with three-year partner Casjen Rico. Breaux and Rico won the 2014 ITA regional championship and finished sixth in the nation in doubles. The tandem earned All-Heartland Conference honors in 2014 and All-American Southwest Conference West Division first team in 2012.

Additionally, Breaux was All-ASC West honorable mention at singles in 2012. As a freshman in 2011, Breaux was All-ASC West first team at fourth singles and second team ASC West for second doubles.

He's had outstanding net results in the classroom for the War Hawks. Breaux was a three-time academic all-conference honoree (ASC as a sophomore and Heartland Conference as a junior and senior). As a senior, he was honored on the HC President’s Honor Roll for grade point averages of 3.50 or higher.

The aluim also led the McMurry team to back-to-back final four finishes at the National Christian College Athletic Association championships.  As a junior in 2013, Breaux and the War Hawks placed third, followed by a national runner-up finish his senior campaign in 2014.

Breaux is a native of Livingston, Texas and was a standout at Livingston High School, where he played under Scotty McFarlain for four seasons. He is the son of Ronald and Bonnie Breaux. He graduated from McMurry in 2014 with a degree in business (marketing).
