After serving as McMurry's first swimmer on the inaugural team in 2000, former McMurry standout Casey Pacheco assumed the role of head coach in June 2017.
Pacheco – who earned his bachelor of science degree (multidisciplinary studies) from McMurry in 2004 - came back to the Maroon & White after serving as the head swim coach for both Abilene and Cooper high schools.
Â
Pacheco has a long association with "retired" head coach Bev Ball (who is still involved with McM swimming as an assistant to Pacheco), swimming for her as both a prep and in college. Ironically, as a senior at Abilene High School in 1999, Pacheco sat in a meeting where Ball announced she was retiring from AHS. Then, just a few months later, he turned out to be McMurry's – and Bev Ball's – first-ever recruit to the University's start-up swim program for the fall of 1999.
Â
Pacheco was McMurry's first four-year letterwinner in swimming. He was also a four-year team captain for McM, as well.
The 2021 season marked his fourth at the helm and turned out the be his most successful season with the men's swim program. The team finished with a 4-0 dual record and the program's highest finish at the SCAC Championships in program history - fifth place.
In Pacheco's third season, a school record fell at the 2020 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, as freshman Terrin Boehmer broke the 200-yard freestyle record in the first leg of the men's 800-yard freestyle relay. Boehmer also earned a podium finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a sixth place finish. Combined, the men and women set 32 personal bests over four days of competition as each team finished seventh.
Both the men's and women's teams finished seventh at the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, with seniors Jerick Pena and Monica Flores earning pdium finishes. Pena placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke and broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke en route to a fourth place finish. Flores claimed seventh in the 400-yard individual medley.Â
At the 2018 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, the McM women were fourth and men sixth. Both squads received the SCAC Sportsmanship Team award. Women's senior Robyn Remschel won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events for the third-straight season.
Â
In addition to his coaching duties, Pacheco also served as a physical education teacher for Abilene ISD. Pacheco spent four years (2006-10) as the swim coach and taught geometry at Granbury High School. Concurrently, he was an age group coach for the Fort Worth Area Swim Team (2006-09). Prior to that, Pacheco coached and taught at Big Spring High School (2004-05).
Â
As for his own career in the pool, Pacheco led McMurry to conference championships in both 2002 and 2003 (the only league titles in school history). He was also McM's male "Swimmer of the Year" as a freshman. At AHS, Pacheco was a four-year district finalist and regional qualifier.
Â
Pacheco has been a member of the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association since 2004. He and his wife Jennifer reside in Abilene and have two children: son Tiegan and daughter Kanon.
