Rexi Parcells was named McMurry's head men's and women's cross country coach on June 21, 2018. In addition to overseeing the McMurry Cross Country programs, Parcells is also an assistant coach with the McMurry Track and Field program and serves as the department-wide assistant strength and conditioning coach.
Parcells has either led or assisted 10 teams to conference championships since her arrival - seven track and three cross country. All 10 times, the coaching staff was voted American Southwest Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.
The distance programs crescendoed in regards to ASC supremacy in 2022-23. She helped guide the cross country teams to a first-ever sweep which was included in the Maroon and White cross country and track and field programs claiming all four league team titles. All of Parcell's hard work in buliding McMurry Cross Country into an annual threat paid off in 2021, as the women's team hoisted its first American Southwest Conference title since 2006 and just the second all-time. The team dominated with 26 points and with 12 runners in the top 34 - doubling last year's total of six. Six women finished with all-conference honors, led by ASC Individual Medalist Jazmin Chacon with a winning time of 23:17.2. Her sister, Janeth Chacon, placed second. Jasmin Mendez, Ashley Shea, Aubrie Brannon and Simona Hamilton joined them with all-conference honors - more than any other team. UMHB was second place with 49 points - well off the winning total. The men also took a leap and finished third at the ASC meet with Gabriel Sanchez landing all-conference honors. Nine runners finished in the top 34 compared to six in the top 53 in 2021.
In Spring 2021, her third season, the men's cross country team had two wins in four meets and finished fourth at the ASC Championship. The women's cross country program had three second place finishes and placed third at the conference championship led by second and third place finishers Jazmin and Janeth Chacon. McMurry had four all-conference selections, the freshman of the year (Janeth Chacon) and newcomer of the year (Niigan Sunray) under Parcells’ watch.
Â
In Fall 2019, her second season, the women's cross country team tied for third at the ASC Championships while the men finished fifth. McMurry also had multiple representatives in the NCAA Regional with Tiffany Cox turning in the seventh-best finish in program history at 55th place. Tiffany was later named to the NCAA DIII All-Academic Women’s Cross Country Team. In her first season at the helm, Parcells led the women's cross country team to an American Southwest Conference runner up finish. Under her watch, Cox has been named second team all-conference in both 2018 and 2019.
Parcells’ teams have also had success in the classroom, as the women’s cross country team has been named a NCAA DIII All-Academic Team in all four of her seasons.
A number of records have fallen with Parcells leading the distance efforts, including Josie Drury and Tiffany Cox breaking records in Parcells’ debut season. More recently, Jazmin Chacon owns the fastest 6K and 5K times in school history, both set in 2021, while also breaking the indoor mile and 3K records and outdoor 5K record during the 2022 track season. Janeth Chacon also set the 10K record in 2022, won the 5K conference title in 2021 and became a back-to-back conference champion in the women's 10K in 2022.
In Parcells' tenure, the women’s team has had individual conference champions in the 800m, 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, and 10,000m and have had a handful of distance runners earn all-conference.
Â
An accomplished competitor in her own right, Parcells was a standout runner at Arkansas State University, helping the Red Wolves win Sun Belt Conference championships in cross country and indoor track in 2013, as well as outdoor track in 2015. During her time at Arkansas State, she set the school record in the indoor mile and outdoor 1500. Parcells finished her collegiate career clocking personal records of 16:39 for 5k and 4:30 in the 1500-meter race. Other collegiate accolades for Parcells include being a three-time Sun Belt Conference Runner of the Week, a three-time All-Conference honoree in cross country, and a two-time all-conference honoree in track & field. In 2015, she was tabbed a USTFCCCA Cross Country All-South Central Region honoree and was named to the USTFCCCA D1 Cross Country All-Academic Team.
Â
Parcells earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from Arkansas State University and later earned her Master’s in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, Parcells owns NSCA-Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, USATF Coaching Education Level 1, USTFCCCA Track & Field Technical Coaching, and American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certifications.
