Returned to McMurry after two years at the junior college level ... Did not compete.

2017 Season (Freshman):
Began his career at McMurry before transferring to Moorpark College, a junior college in California ... Played in nine games as a true freshman quarterback, taking the starting job for an injured Kevin Hurley Jr. midway through the season ... Had a breakout performance against Texas Lutheran, completing 31-of-46 passes for 370 yards and two touchdowns ... Helped the War Hawks defeat Belhaven the following week, going 9-for-22 with 69 yards and one touchdown ... Finished 60-for-113 on the year with three touchdowns and five interceptions.

After his freshman year at McMurry in 2017, James transferred to Moorpark College where he spent two seasons as a quarterback (2018 and 2019).
