Wilford Moore Stadium

FOOTBALL, MEN'S & WOMEN'S SOCCER, MEN'S & WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Wilford Moore Stadium, originally opened in 1937, was renamed in 2007 after one of the most successful football coaches in McMurry history — Wilford H. Moore. The Stadium is home to McMurry's football, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's track and field teams.

In addition to the fairly recent installation of new state-of-the-art FieldTurf surface, the facility also hosts one of West Texas' newest tracks. The track surrounding the football and soccer field was installed in the Spring of 2019 and has attracted teams from around the region to compete in outdoor home meets. In addition to necessary football and soccer equipment, the facility also houses jumping pits, a pole vault area and space for high jump events behind the North end zone.

On September 24, 2021, Wilford Moore Stadium got another facelift. With the help of 3rd Street Printing, McMurry Athletics was able to add new signage along both the visiting and home press boxes. One of the logos, flanking each side of the field near the 20 yard line, represents McMurry Athletics' #UnitedAsWarHawks campaign in dedication to diversity, inclusion and gender equity.

The facility's namesake is Wilford H. Moore, who coached McMurry for several years, but was the head football coach from 1947-54. He led the team to a 48-25-5 record, guided the program to four conference championships and was named the Texas Conference "Coach of the Year" in 1948, 1949 and 1953. His winning percentage of .610 is the highest among all the head coaches in McMurry history with a minimum of 20 victories.

Moore's original stadium dedication ceremony took place in May of 2007, less than a year after the university added a brand new track surface and new artificial turf in a $1.6 million project to overhaul the surfaces.

In the Spring of 2011, McMurry debuted the Bobby Lee Carter Throws Complex directly to the west of Wilford Moore Stadium. There, the War Hawks have a hammer and discus throws area, which recently underwent renovations in the Spring of 2020. On football gamedays, this nearby facility is used for tailgating and becomes the "McMurry Football Fan and Family Fun Fest" area.

The track program boasted greats like the late Bill Miller and 17-time all-American Hann Ollison. Ollison helped lead McMurry University to the first team national championship in school history in 2008 by winning the NCAA Division III Outdoor crown. The War Hawk men brought home another NCAA III outdoor track championship  in 2012 - behind the efforts of senior "Outstanding Performer" Kevin Cunningham's pair of titles in the 400 and 400 hurdles - adding another title for the Moore Stadium occupants.

Following the school's most accomplished football season and first-ever NCAA playoff berth in 2011, a $2.2 million renovation that included a new press box and private suites, concession area, restrooms, events deck, elevator, entry concourse and chair-back stadium seating was completed in the fall of 2012 and the facility re-dedicated that September. A new Field Turf playing surface was installed in the summer of 2013.

Although the site once held 4,500 people, reduced seating now has the stadium's capacity at 3,550 fan-friendly seats. The facility plays north and south for football with home seating on the west side. The stadium is located on campus just south of South 14th Street on Ross Street, with ample parking located both adjacent to the stadium and in surrounding campus lots.
