Second-Half Rally Falls Short as War Hawks Drop Home Opener

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Women's Soccer dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Texas Lutheran on Tuesday evening at Wilford Moore Stadium in its first home match of the season.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the seventh minute and doubled their advantage in the 27th minute via a penalty kick to take a 2-0 edge into halftime. McMurry goalkeeper Cadence Foulkrod kept the War Hawks within striking distance during the opening frame, turning away four shots on target.

McMurry came out firing in the second half, generating all seven of its shots over the final 45 minutes. The War Hawks broke through in the 60th minute when Laila Brown drove home an unassisted strike to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Texas Lutheran answered back in the 71st minute to push its lead to 3-1, but McMurry continued to press the attack. In the 81st minute, the War Hawks were awarded a penalty kick, and Hailey Andrle calmly slotted it past the keeper to bring the War Hawks back within a single score at 3-2. McMurry created late opportunities, including a pair of corner kicks down the stretch, but could not find the equalizer before time expired.

Texas Lutheran out-shot McMurry 13-7, but Foulkrod registered seven saves in goal to keep the War Hawks in contention for the full 90 minutes.

Brown led the McMurry attack with two shots, putting both on frame with a goal. Andrle scored on her lone shot on target, while Cienna Rodriguez added two shot attempts. Genevieve Dorasami and Isabella Johnson chipped in one shot apiece, and McMurry earned a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks on the night.

The War Hawks return to action Sunday, September 13th at 11:00 a.m., hosting Centenary College at Wilford Moore Stadium.
