SHERMAN, TX - The McMurry War Hawks faced off against Austin College on April 3, 2026, at Baker Field. The final score was 4-3 in favor of Austin College.
McMurry struck first in the top of the opening inning.
Collin Bruning hit a double down the left-field line.
Scout Smith then reached first base on a second baseman's error, which allowed Bruning to score an unearned run and give the War Hawks an early 1-0 lead. Austin responded quickly in the bottom half of the first inning with a two-run homer down the left-field line, taking a 2-1 lead.
Building on the early scoring, the War Hawks rallied in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead.
Scout Smith reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and quickly stole second base.
Dru Ohmstede followed with a single to left-center, bringing Smith home for an unearned run to tie the game.
Blake Risko kept the momentum going with a single through the left side, and
Kia'i Sylvester advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt.
Diego Flores grounded into a double play, but it was enough to score Ohmstede, putting McMurry ahead 3-2.
McMurry's starting pitcher,
Hunter Poe, kept the Austin offense quiet through the middle innings, maintaining the one-run lead. The War Hawks threatened again in the top of the ninth when
Kaden Buske drew a walk and successfully stole both second and third base, but McMurry was unable to capitalize and left him stranded.
The game shifted in the bottom of the ninth, as Austin College mounted a late comeback against McMurry reliever
Adam Trevino. After drawing back-to-back walks and executing a sacrifice bunt, Austin hit an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 3-3. Moments later, Austin sealed a 4-3 walk-off victory with an RBI single to third base.
Top Performers
Hunter Poe: Threw 7.0 innings, striking out five and allowing two earned runs on five hits.
Blake Risko: Led the McMurry offense by going 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles.
Collin Bruning: Doubled in the first and scored McMurry's opening run.
Dru Ohmstede: Went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and a run scored in the fourth.
