SHREVEPORT, LA - It was a tough day on the diamond for our McMurry War Hawks in their doubleheader against Centenary College on April 10th in Shreveport. Centenary took both games, with scores of 9-6 in game one and a heartbreaking 6-5 extra-innings loss in game two.
Game One: Centenary College 9, McMurry 6
In the first game, Centenary took an early lead, plating four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
The War Hawks battled back in the top of the fourth.
Marissa Cardenas sparked the offense with an RBI single to score
Angelina Kulbeth.
Samantha Gonzalez followed up with an RBI single of her own, bringing home
Reaghan Staehely and Cardenas on an error to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Centenary's offense surged again in the sixth, adding five runs to extend their lead to 9-3.
Showing true resilience, McMurry rallied in the seventh.
Elaina Herrera ripped an RBI single to score
Kami Owen , and Staehely added another RBI single to bring home
Taylor McCurdy , but the comeback ultimately fell short at 9-6.
Nyema Muhammad started in the circle, pitching 5.1 innings for the War Hawks.
Game Two: Centenary 6, McMurry 5 (8 innings)
Game two saw the War Hawks' offense come alive early. In the top of the third, McMurry exploded for four runs.
Reaghan Staehely delivered a clutch two-RBI single, scoring
Kaelyn Rodriguez and
Taylor McCurdy.
Sophia Steele then reached on a fielder's choice that brought home
Angelina Kulbeth and Staehely, giving the War Hawks a 4-0 advantage.
McMurry added to their lead in the fourth when
Taylor McCurdy's fielder's choice scored
Kami Owen.
Emmalee Gebhart pitched a strong game, holding Centenary to just one run through the first five innings.
However, a late rally by Centenary, aided by McMurry errors, allowed them to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5.
The game went into extra innings, where Centenary secured the 6-5 victory with a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth.
Top Performers
Reaghan Staehely: Staehely was a consistent offensive force, going 3-for-4 with an RBI in game one and 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game two.
Taylor McCurdy: McCurdy contributed heavily at the plate and on the basepaths, tallying a hit and a run in the first game , followed by two hits, a run, and an RBI in the second.
Kami Owen: Owen provided a great spark, scoring a run on a pinch-hit single in game one and adding a hit and two runs in game two.
Emmalee Gebhart: Gebhart delivered a gritty performance in the circle during game two, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing only two earned runs to keep the War Hawks in control for most of the contest.
