War Hawks Drop Doubleheader to St. Thomas

HOUSTON, TX - It was a tough day on the diamond for our McMurry War Hawks in their road conference doubleheader against the University of St. Thomas on February 27th in Houston. The Celts took both games, with scores of 9-4 in game one and 3-1 in game two.

Game One: St. Thomas 9, McMurry 4
In the first game, the War Hawks started quickly, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Morgan Faubion reached base and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Reaghan Staehely. However, St. Thomas responded immediately with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. McMurry fought back in the top of the second, capitalizing on hits and errors. Kaelyn Rodriguez singled to drive in Elaina Herrera, and moments later, Reaghan Staehely delivered a clutch single to center field, driving in Taylor McCurdy and Alyssa Hernandez to tie the game at 4-4.

Despite the offensive surge, St. Thomas's offense proved too potent. The Celts retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the second and added insurance runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to secure the 9-4 victory. Rexie Sanders pitched a complete game for the War Hawks, going six innings in the circle.

Game Two: St. Thomas 3, McMurry 1
Game two was a tighter defensive battle. St. Thomas jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and one in the second. McMurry's offense struggled to string together hits against St. Thomas pitching early on. The War Hawks broke through in the top of the fourth inning when Angelina Kulbeth singled and stole second base. She crossed the plate on a groundout by Sophia Steele to cut the deficit to 3-1, but that was all the offense McMurry could muster. Nyema Muhammad pitched a solid game for McMurry, throwing a complete game and allowing only three runs on seven hits.
