AUSTIN, TX - It was a dominant opening day for the McMurry War Hawks as they swept a season-opening doubleheader against Huston-Tillotson on January 30th at Mabson Field. The War Hawks showcased a high-powered offense and steady pitching, securing 20-2 and 9-1 victories.
Game One: McMurry 20, Huston-Tillotson 2
The War Hawks wasted no time establishing control in the series opener, crossing the plate three times in the first inning.
Taylor McCurdy ignited the offense with a lead-off single and quickly manufactured a run by stealing second and scoring on a single by
Morgan Faubion.
Sophia Steele added an RBI double later in the frame to push the early lead to 3-0.
McMurry's bats truly exploded in the second inning, where they sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on 10 hits. The rally featured a flurry of hits, including a two-RBI double from
Taylor McCurdy and a two-RBI double from
Sophia Steele.
Samantha Gonzalez,
Reaghan Staehely, and
Elaina Herrera all contributed RBI singles during the massive surge.
The War Hawks added two more in the third and three in the fourth, highlighted by a
Reaghan Staehely RBI double and a sacrifice fly from
Brooklyn Nehring.
Samantha Gonzalez capped the scoring in the fifth with a two-RBI bunt single. On the mound,
Rexie Sanders was perfect through three innings to earn the win, while
Emmalee Gebhart provided two innings of relief to seal the 20-2 victory.
Game Two: McMurry 9, Huston-Tillotson 1
The second game followed a similar script as the War Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Elizabeth Yaws drove in the first run with an RBI double, followed by a
Nyema Muhammad RBI double that plated two more following an error.
Alexis King capped the first-inning scoring with an RBI single.
Angelina Kulbeth extended the lead in the second inning with a solo home run to left field. After a few quiet innings, the McMurry offense reignited in the sixth.
Rexie Sanders came through with a massive two-run pinch-hit home run to center field, scoring
Kiera Ramirez.
Marissa Cardenas provided the final blow with a two-RBI double to right-center, scoring
Elizabeth Yaws and
Alexis Martinez.
Nyema Muhammad started in the circle, allowing just one run over three innings of work.
Thalia Reyes took over in the fourth and was nearly untouchable, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing only two hits to earn the win.
