McMurry Protects Home Court with Fourth Straight Conference Win

Myra McCaskill, McMurry Sports Information

ABILENE, TX – Using a high-energy transition game and a tough defensive stand, the McMurry War Hawks defeated LeTourneau University, 82-49, on Sunday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena. The victory moves McMurry to 10-2 on the season and keeps them undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record.

McMurry set the tempo from the jump, leading for over 37 minutes of the game. The difference maker was the team's ability to turn defense into points; they forced 19 turnovers and turned them into 21 points. The War Hawks were especially dangerous in the open court, outscoring the YellowJackets 32-0 in fast-break points. They also controlled the interior, scoring 56 points in the paint and out-rebounding LeTourneau 51-33.

From the opening tip, Helana Chadwick was in total control. She finished the afternoon with a game-high 29 points, showcasing her ability to score from all over the floor. She was remarkably efficient, knocking down 11 of her 20 shots from the field and adding seven points from the free-throw line. Her scoring bursts in transition were a major reason the War Hawks were able to pull away early and keep the pressure on the YellowJackets. She led the team in playmaking with six assists, frequently finding open teammates as the defense collapsed on her.

Aryana Cleveland dominated inside, finishing with 20 points on an efficient 9-of-13 shooting. Cleveland was a major factor on both ends of the court. In addition to her offensive output, Cleveland was a major factor on the boards and on the defensive end. She hauled down seven rebounds and recorded two steals, anchoring a defensive unit that held the YellowJackets to just 49 points. Her active hands and interior positioning were key to McMurry's 56-14 scoring advantage in the paint.

Briley Waters was the third War Hawk in double figures, adding 11 points in a solid all-around game. Waters shot nearly 50% from the field and was active on the boards, hauling in six rebounds to help McMurry maintain their massive edge on the glass.

The McMurry bench depth was on display once again, chipping in 21 points to keep the pressure on. As a team, the War Hawks shot 46.6% for the game and held a 40-10 advantage in defensive rebounding, limiting LeTourneau's second-chance looks.
