BROWNWOOD, TX - The McMurry War Hawks completed a successful road trip, defeating the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets in four sets with scores of 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, and 25-14. The hard-fought road victory moves their overall record to 8-4 and maintains the War Hawks' positive momentum as they head into the heart of their conference schedule.
The War Hawks' offense delivered a commanding performance, highlighted by Marcette Williams, who led the team with 14 kills and hit an impressive .355 for the match. Williams' strong showing secured her 200th career kill, marking a major personal milestone. Layleah Williams-Gibson was also a significant offensive threat, tallying eight kills and hitting .261. The attack was skillfully coordinated by Carli Colbert, who paced the team with 21 assists, and Alexis Dolton, who added 11 assists.
McMurry was aggressive from the service line, collecting eight total aces. Williams-Gibson delivered a team-high three aces, while Jalie Miller contributed 2. Defensively, Miller anchored the back row with a team-high 18 digs, followed closely by Isabela Dorsey with 14 digs and Dolton with 10. At the net, the War Hawks accumulated six total blocks. Williams-Gibson led the blocking effort, assisting on three blocks, while Williams and Shaely Rogers each had two block assists.
After dropping a tough first set 18-25, the War Hawks displayed great resolve by taking the next three sets. McMurry found its rhythm quickly, closing out the match with decisive victories in the third set, which saw a late push for the 25-23 win, and a dominant 25-14 final set to secure the victory.
The War Hawks travel to Houston, Texas, this weekend, October 4-5, to compete in the SCAC Crossover Tournament on the University of St. Thomas campus against conference foes Hendrix College and the University of Dallas on Saturday, and Austin College on Sunday.
