McMurry Volleyball Finishes Day One 2-0 at Millsaps Tournament

JACKSON, MS — The McMurry War Hawks swept the Lyon Scots in a three-set match on Friday to open play at the Millsaps College Tournament, winning with scores of 25-22, 25-13, and 25-14 to improve their season record to 4-1.

The offense was a well-rounded effort, with Rylie Patterson leading the team with 10 kills and a formidable .769 hitting percentage. Marcette Williams and Shaely Rogers were also key offensive contributors, adding eight kills and five kills, respectively. The attack was set up by Carli Colbert and Alexis Dolton, who distributed 13 and 8 assists, respectively.

From the service line, McMurry was a force, recording 12 total aces. Jalie Miller and Rogers each had four aces, while Madi Polasek contributed 2. On defense, Colbert led the team with eight digs, and Patterson had 7. The War Hawks also showed their strength at the net, tallying six total blocks.

The War Hawks had to battle for the first set, overcoming an early deficit to secure a 25-22 victory. They completely dominated the second and third sets, with runs of 7-0 and 11-0, respectively, to close out the match with decisive 25-13 and 25-14 wins.

In their second contest of the day against the Dallas Crusaders, the War Hawks were victorious in four sets, with set scores of 25-16, 17-25, 25-18, and 25-17. The win ups the War Hawks' season record to 5-1.

The McMurry offense was led by Marcette Williams, who had 10 kills, and Rylie Patterson, who contributed eight kills on a .294 hitting percentage. Layleah Williams-Gibson was also a key factor with seven kills. The offense was orchestrated by Alexis Dolton and Allison Montoya, who had 18 and 9 assists, respectively.

The War Hawks were a formidable presence from the service line, collecting 13 total aces. Williams-Gibson had four aces, while Dolton, Madi Polasek, and Jalie Miller each added 3. On defense, Colbert led the team with 10 digs, and Miller and Patterson each had 6. The War Hawks also tallied six total blocks, with Williams assisting on 2 of them.

After a dominant 25-16 win in the first set, the War Hawks struggled in the second, falling 17-25. However, they quickly regained their form, winning the third and fourth sets with strong offensive performances to secure the victory.

McMurry returns to the court Saturday against Belhaven University at 10:00 a.m. and Huntingdon College at 12:00 p.m.
