ABILENE, TX – McMurry University is proud to announce the appointment of
Caroline Cleveland as the newest head coach for the War Hawks volleyball program. This promotion follows her recent return to the athletics staff as an assistant coach. A native of Abilene with deep ties to the university and a proven track record of success, Cleveland brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to her new leadership role.
Cleveland returned to McMurry in 2024, serving as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for DEI and Administration and an assistant volleyball coach. Her previous tenure as an assistant volleyball coach from 2014-2015 saw the War Hawks achieve impressive records of 21-13 and 19-11, including two appearances in the NCCAA national tournament. She also led the Abilene Aces club team during this period, securing nine tournament victories in two seasons.
In 2016, Cleveland joined Abilene High School as an assistant in volleyball and soccer before being named the head volleyball coach in 2021. Under her leadership, the Eagles made three postseason appearances, a significant accomplishment given the program had not reached the playoffs since 2015. Her exceptional coaching was recognized with Coach of the Year honors in 2022, a year in which her team notably finished ninth.
A proud alumna, Cleveland played volleyball at Angelo State before graduating from McMurry with a degree in business administration in 2014. Her family history is also deeply intertwined with McMurry, as she is the daughter of former McMurry employee Chris Proctor-Cleveland and the granddaughter of former McMurry coach Glen Cleveland and Billye Proctor-Shaw.
"We are proud to announce
Caroline Cleveland as the new head volleyball coach at McMurry University. As an alumna and woman of faith, Coach Cleveland leads with integrity, purpose, and a heart for service," Athletic Director Larry Dockery said of Cleveland's appointment. Adding, "Her passion for developing scholar-athletes and engaging in the community reflects the very best of McMurry. Congratulations, Coach Cleveland!"
Beyond her coaching prowess, Cleveland is actively involved in the community, volunteering with various organizations in Abilene.
McMurry University is thrilled to welcome Coach Cleveland to lead the volleyball program, confident that her experience, dedication, and connection to the community will inspire student-athletes and elevate the team to new heights.
