Walk-Off Chaos: McMurry Edges Hardin-Simmons in 11-Inning Thriller

ABILENE, TX - The Hardin-Simmons Cowboys came into Walt Driggers Field looking for redemption after the War Hawks claimed a 12-11 victory in extra innings back in February. The Cowboys got things started early with a three-run first inning before Gabriel Aragon and the War Hawks were able to escape any more damage in the opening frame getting a double play to close the frame. McMurry was able to scratch a run across the bottom of the inning, with Riley Hood scoring on a Collin Bruning single to bring the score to 3-1 Hardin-Simmons.

The Cowboys would get another run in the top of the third and two more in the fourth off junior right-hander Jerek Pena. McMurry would get some of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Nolan Scherencel, scoring Beckham Paul, and a Josh Mueller RBI fielder's choice bringing Ty Nelson home. Hardin-Simmons would escape any more damage getting out of the inning with the bases loaded, bringing their lead to 6-3.

Both teams would have a quiet sixth, with Chris Teten coming in in relief and striking out two. In the seventh Hardin-Simmons would have a busy inning, bringing across three runs on three hits and a McMurry error, before junior pitcher Trey Gomez entered to get the final out of the inning on two pitches.

The War Hawks would quickly get the runs back in the seventh with an RBI double by Nolan Scherencel, scoring Colin Bruning, who had walked. Koy Carpenter would enter the game as a pinch hitter and would draw a walk. Following a sacrifice bunt by Josh Mueller to move the runners up to second and third, Michael Smosna would hit a pinch-hit three-run homerun to bring McMurry within striking distance at 9-7.

The War Hawks' pitching of Bryson Morrill and David Perez silenced the Cowboys' bats over the final four innings. McMurry would grind out at-bats through the eighth and ninth innings to get a run in each inning on RBI from Blake Beach and Riley Hood, evening the score at 9-9 and pushing the game into extra innings.

After a scoreless tenth inning, the eleventh inning would see an exciting end to the game. A lead-off single by Riley Hood followed by a passed ball to move him to second. Blake Beach, who had entered in the eighth inning, would reach on the Hardin-Simmons shortstop's third error of the game and push Hood to third with two outs. On a 2-0 count to Josh Mueller, Riley Hood would race home on a passed ball the catcher could not secure and, with a bang-bang play at the plate, dive in with the winning run to end the ballgame.
