GEORGETOWN- McMurry softball travelled to Georgetown to take on Southwestern in a three game series with the Pirates as they tried to improve their place in the conference standings over the weekend.Â
The opening game of the series had its fair share of offensive fireworks from both sides. In a game where the 2 teams combined for 21 runs, it's only fitting that it came down to the end. McMurry struck first, but Southwestern answered in their half of the first inning. The two teams would go back and forth throughout the remainder of the contest. McMurry would ride a huge fifth inning where they scored 6 runs to lead them to a victory in game 1. A late rally by Southwestern would fall short as McMurry went on to win this one; 12-9. Baylee Fulps got the win in the circle, Aliyah Tanguma had 3 RBI's, followed by Angelina Kulbeth & Maya Mongelli with 2 RBI's a piece.Â
GAME 2- The next game would continue the trend of close contests as this one would also come down to the end, just like the first one. In game 2, the War Hawks were unable to get any sort of offense going until late in the game. The Pirates took a 6-0 lead all the way into the 6th inning before McMurry lit up their section of the scoreboard. The War Hawks scored 4 in the sixth inning as they looked to rally for a come from behind win, but fell short as the Pirates shut the door and won game 2 by a score of 6-4. Sophia Steele & Sabrina Graf led the War Hawks at the plate in the second contest.Â
GAME 3- Once again, the two teams found themselves in a close matchup in the third and final game of the series, which would be the game to determine the series winner. McMurry came out swinging as they took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The bats would stay hot as the War Hawks built up a 5-0 lead through their half of the 3rd inning. In the bottom of the third, the Pirates would start to make their comeback. Southwestern scored in all of their next 4 at bats as they took a 7-6 lead into the final frame with McMurry looking to rally one last time. The Pirates were able to hold off the War Hawks in the seventh inning as they took game three, ultimately taking the series with 2 wins to McMurry's 1. It was a hard fought series where the two teams battled back and forth. The run differential was dead even at 22-22, if that tells you anything about how closely contested the series was.Â
McMurry will be back in action at home for a weekend series with UDallas, starting on Friday with the first pitch being scheduled for 6:00pm.Â
