Baseball falls to Trinity in weekend series

SAN ANTONIO- The McMurry baseball team traveled to San Antonio for a big conference series with Trinity, who is ranked in the top 10 and at the top of the conference. McMurry came into the series looking to take sole possession of first place in the SCAC, but knew it would be a challenge on the road against a very good opponent.

The War Hawks were unable to break through in the contests as Trinity was able to get the sweep by winning all 3 games over the weekend.

GAME 1- Trinity started the game off quickly with a run in the bottom of the first inning. McMurry was able to respond with a run of their own in the second inning to even the score at 1, but the Tigers scored 4 in the bottom half of the second frame to put the game at 5-1. The rest of the game was a defensive battle as only 1 more run would be scored by McMurry & no more runs by Trinity. Trinity would win this one by a score of 5-2.  Michael Smosna had 3 hits & an RBI.

GAME 2- The defense continued in the second contest of the series as neither team was able to get much going offensively in the early going. McMurry scored the first run in the second inning, but it would end up being their only run. McMurry held the lead all the way until the bottom of the 5th before Trinity plated across 3 in the frame, followed by 2 more in the sixth inning. Trinity would win this one by a score of 5-1. Michael Smosna again had a game at the plate with 4 hits, including 2 doubles. Josh Mueller batted in the lone run for the War Hawks.

GAME 3- McMurry would look to get a game out of the series in Game 3 as they came out playing well. The War Hawks got a run in the second inning once again as they took the first lead of the contest. McMurry kept up their good defense as they took a 5-2 lead all the way into the bottom of the 9th before Trinity put together a fierce 9th inning rally to walk off with a 6-5 win in game 3, getting them the series sweep over McMurry. Xavier Escobar & Nolan Scherencel both went 2 for 3 at the plate and had 2 RBI's a piece.

Trinity out scored McMurry 16-8 overall in the series, but the War Hawks were in all of the games until the very end as they worked to earn a win but just never broke through.

McMurry will look to get back on track as they take on Southwestern in a 3-game weekend home series in Abilene starting on Friday at 7:00PM.
