BROWNWOOD, TX – The McMurry War Hawks men's basketball team secured a convincing 90-78 victory over Arlington Baptist University on Friday evening as part of the Dallas Huston Classic, improving the team's record to 4-4 on the season. The War Hawks took control in the first half and used a dominant second-half surge to seal the double-digit win.
The contest featured five lead changes early on before the War Hawks established control, closing the first period on a strong run to take a solid 40-32 lead into the break. McMurry maintained a high offensive efficiency throughout the contest, shooting 43.3% from the field and winning the critical rebounding battle, which led to numerous extra chances.
In the second half, the War Hawks pulled away decisively. They opened the period with fierce aggression, leading to a crucial 13-0 scoring run that stretched their lead to a game-high 23 points. While Arlington Baptist attempted to rally late with an 8-0 run, McMurry consistently answered, primarily capitalizing on free-throw opportunities to squash the comeback. The depth of the squad proved essential, contributing 32 points from the bench, and the team's relentless effort on the glass resulted in a decisive 20 second-chance points.
Top War Hawk Performers
- Jalen Cherry: Anchored the effort with a near double-double, scoring 18 points on highly efficient 8-of-14 shooting from the field. He dominated the interior, leading the team with 14 rebounds, alongside two assists and two steals.
- Amari Leflore: Was the team's primary three-point weapon, contributing 15 points by shooting 5-of-11 from beyond the arc. He also added six rebounds and three assists.
- Cedrick Dodd: Provided clutch free-throw scoring, tallying 13 points by sinking 13-of-18 attempts from the charity stripe. He also pulled down three rebounds and added two assists.
- Koye Rondeno: Shot efficiently from the perimeter off the bench, adding 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range.
