War Hawks Fall in SCAC Opener to Schreiner on the Road

KERRVILLE, TX – The McMurry War Hawks men's basketball team traveled to Schreiner University for their SCAC conference opener, falling in a high-scoring, hard-fought road battle, 90-85. Despite dominating the glass and shooting efficiently from the field, the War Hawks couldn't erase an early deficit established by the Mountaineers.

The game was marked by aggressive play from both sides, with five lead changes and six ties throughout. Schreiner got off to a quick start, taking advantage of a high-volume three-point attack and strong interior defense, which helped them build a 46-37 lead by halftime.

The War Hawks refused to quit, mounting a relentless comeback effort in the second half by outscoring the Mountaineers 48-44. McMurry's offense was consistent throughout the game, finishing at 45.0% from the field and an impressive 36.0% from three-point range. The team's hustle paid dividends, resulting in 20 second-chance points fueled by 11 offensive rebounds, and the bench provided a massive boost, contributing 27 points to keep the War Hawks within striking distance until the final horn.

  • Koye Rondeno: Led the team with 17 points in just 22 minutes, demonstrating elite efficiency by shooting a perfect 6-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from three-point range.
  • JaRayl Peoples: Provided consistent scoring with 13 points, hitting 2-of-6 from deep and adding four rebounds.
  • Cedrick Dodd: Contributed 13 points and commanded the floor with a team-high five assists, playing a team-leading 37 minutes.
  • Zack Rygg: Was highly efficient off the bench, adding 10 points by shooting 3-for-4 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.
