ABILENE – McMurry opened women's soccer season with an impressive 7-0 win over Lyon on Friday.

Seven different War Hawks put the ball in the net and four goalkeepers combined for the clean sheet. It was McMurry's best-scoring game since 2019 when the War Hawks scored seven goals twice.

McMurry took the lead in the third minute with
Emily Holland scoring with an assist from
Jaelynn Portillo.

Hailey Donaldson and
Cate Tempelmeyer added goals in the 11
th and 24
th minutes to help send the War Hawks to the half with a 3-0 lead.

McKenna Standifer and
Kaylee Worth got goals in the 50
th and 51
st minutes , both with assists by
Haylie Blakley.

Hailey Graham got in on the fun in the 66
th minute with an assist from Ava Yabarra.

Portillo wrapped up the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 90
th minute.

The War Hawks had 39 shots in the game, putting 21 on goal.

The McMurry defense was spectacular, limiting Lyon to three shots. The War Hawks needed only one save and they got it from the second keeper of the night,
Kaitlyn Gustafson.

"One of our goals every game is to have a shutout and limit opportunities," said MCM head coach
Charles Nobles. "It's really exciting for us from the attacking side of it, to see that mean chances over. We'll get more and more clinical as the season goes on, but this was a real team performance. We got everybody in, so that's really exciting."
