War Hawks Score Late for 1-0 Win

ABILENE – McMurry opened by saving the best for last in its 1-0 victory over Lyon College on Friday.

It appeared the War Hawks would face a rough night after a red card put them a man down for the final 66 minutes of the game but the defense clogged things up, Brandon Walker came up with four saves and Jovani Burnett put in the lone goal with three seconds on the clock.

With time winding down, Dylan Christian got the long throw-in from the right sideline and Burnett connected for the game-winner.

"Honestly it's something we worked on a little bit but really you have to give coach Lo (Lorenzo Segura) the credit," said McM head coach Charles Nobles. "He's the one that sent Jovani in the box. The talent that man has as a coach is amazing. "

The play capped off a gutsy performance that would have been a strong showing even without the goal.

"What's awesome about that is we've talked to these boys so much about changing things in the culture and that they're going to be faced with adversity. It was great to see how they responded to that and to see them fight. You just can't be more proud of a group of men like that tonight."

The defense allowed just 12 shots despite being shorthanded for so long. The War Hawks had nine shots and put six on frame.

McMurry travels across town next week to take on Hardin-Simmons at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
