War Hawks Down Sul Ross

ABILENE – McMurry knocked down eight of 16 three-pointers in the second half to take an 80-61 win over Sul Ross State on Monday.

The War Hawks shot 41 percent from long range on the night and dominated all night.

"Proud of the effort tonight," said McMurry head coach Drew Long. "I thought we carried out the game plan and locked in on the scouting report. It always helps when you're making shots but I thought we executed well on both ends of the floor and took care of the ball. We are starting to figure some things out but we need to continue to grow and learn how to close out quarters and halves."

McMurry scored the first six points of the game and never trailed. The War Hawks went up 14-2 on a Jordan Bravo three-pointer with 4:36 left in the first quarter. Emily Holland previewed the second half with a late second-quarter three-pointer for a 37-25 halftime lead.

The Yellow Jackets got as close as six points in the third quarter but Bravo added two three-pointers as McMurry closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run. The lead peaked at 21 points when Gracyn Shultz added a three-pointer with 30 seconds left in the game.

Kylie Flippin led McMurry with 19 points, followed by Holland with 15, Bravo with 12 and Helana Chadwick with 10. Chadwick also brought down 11 rebounds. Bravo and Flippin had four three-pointers apiece.

The War Hawks return to action Thursday morning at Sam Houston State in an 11 a.m. exhibition.
