McMurry Sets TFL Records in Road Win

SHREVEPORT – McMurry overcame a four-turnover night and finished the first half of its SCAC schedule at 4-0 with a 28-10 road win at Centenary on Saturday.

Kane Strohman set a school record with 6.5 tackles for loss, breaking David O'Shields' record of 5.5 against Louisiana College in 2001. He threw Gents ball-carriers for 24 yards in losses, including 2.5 quarterback sacks for losses of 15 yards. McMurry had 18 tackles for loss in the game, tying the SCAC school record, originally set in 2002 by Rose-Hulman College against Earlham.

After Centenary took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, McMurry took the lead for good with a 65-yard pass play from Jess Hoel to Kristopher Martin. Martin finished the night with 146 yards on six receptions. The TD capped a two-play, 68-yard drive for the War Hawks.

Hoel used a 35-yard run to set up a four-yard touchdown run by Jack Ishmael to end a five-play, 57-yard march. Tristen Hall caught a two-point conversion pass for a 14-3 lead with 14:22 showing on the second-quarter clock.

The War Hawks chewed five minutes off of the third-quarter clock on a back-breaking 12-play, 61-yard drive for a 21-3 lead with 5:19 to go in the period. McMurry converted three third downs on the drive and Drew Hagler punctuated it with a 15-yard scoring run.

The McMurry defense forced a three-and-out on the next Gents possession. A 53-yard Hoel-to-Martin pass play set up a nine-yard TD run by Hoel for a 28-3 lead with 2:10 to go in the third quarter.

Centenary got into the end zone with 6:26 left in the fourth quarter.

Hoel finished the night with 251 yards passing on 18 of 32 attempts with one touchdown against three interceptions. Hagler led the team with 40 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Bryce Neves, Dylon Davis and Cole Riha were credited with one interception each.

Nathan Weatherspoon had three tackles for loss.

McMurry hosts Hardin-Simmons in a non-conference game Saturday at 6 p.m.
