McMurry University's War Hawks had six players in double figures as they rolled past Howard Payne University 99-73 Thursday, Jan. 25 in Brownwood.
Junior guard Matt Pena (El Paso, Texas) was tops in scoring with 21 points, followed by senior guard CJ LeBlanc (Dallas, Texas) with 15, senior forward/center Elias Garcia (Houston, Texas) and sophomore guard Coco Rose (Odessa, Texas) with 14 each, and junior forward TJ Hilliard (New Orleans, Louisiana) and junior forward Josh Alcocer (San Antonio, Texas) with 13 apiece.
Coach Zach Pickelman's team won the first half 45-39 and came out of the halftime break on a mission, taking the second half 54-34.
Pena was a sizzling 7 of 10 from three-point land as the visitors connected on 15 long-range bombs. LeBlanc added three, Rose made two, and freshman forward Tristan Holden (San Antonio, Texas), Garcia and Alcocer had one each. McMurry only had six free-throw opportunities but made four of them as Garcia was 3 of 4 and Hilliard was 1 of 1.
Garcia and Hilliard both had a double-double with Garcia getting 12 rebounds, one on offense and 11 on defense, and Hilliard having 11 rebounds, five on offense and six on defense. The War Hawks stole the ball 13 times. LeBlanc had four thefts, Rose added three, Pena and Holden chipped in two apiece and Alcocer and Hilliard contributed one each. Pena, Garcia and Holden all blocked a shot.
McMurry, 9-9 overall and 3-7 in the American Southwest Conference, plays at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
