ABILENE, TEXAS – Overcoming a quiet opening 30 minutes due to a hard-charging Schreiner University team, McMurry University made Senior Day 2023 memorable for its six-member Class of 2024 group Sunday, Sept. 10.
 
The visiting Mountaineers kept possession over a lions share of the first half but were foiled by the veteran War Hawks back line. With less than 15 minutes to go until the break, junior forward Emily Holland (Mansfield, Texas) added to her ever-growing success resume beating SU's goalkeeper for a score at 31:45, as freshman forward Kaylee Worth (Frisco, Texas) assisted.
 
Both teams settled in to begin the second stanza. Once again, it was Holland breaking the ice with a breakaway and rocket shot into the left corner for a 2-0 lead. Junior forward/midfielder Jaelynn Portillo (Grand Prairie, Texas) added one more score for the Maroon and White, taking a feed from senior midfielder Haleigh Ray (Argyle, Texas).
 
Head coach Charles Nobles' defense made a strong bid for a fourth clean sheet. However, the visitors found the back of the home net in the final minute to conclude a 3-1 War Hawks' victory. Holland and sophomore midfielder Alexis Lira (North Richland Hills, Texas) topped a 14-6 shots advantage, as the junior finished with seven of which three were on goal and Lira earned three with two on frame.
 
The win moved McMurry to 5-0. The War Hawks are back on the pitch Wednesday, Sept. 13, traveling to Plainview, Texas, to battle Wayland Baptist.
