SLUGFEST GOES DOWN TO WIRE

ABILENE, TEXAS – For fans of diamond offense, the American Southwest Conference opener between McMurry University and East Texas Baptist University didn't disappoint Friday, March 31.

The host War Hawks and visiting Tigers posted 11 extra-base hits, five of them big flies, 22 runs, and 32 hits in a back-and-forth affair at Walt Driggers Field. Ultimately, the league's leading group overcame an 8-4 deficit midway through by tallying eight of the final 10 runs for a 12-10 decision.

Head coach Josh Lee's squad pushed ETBU to the proverbial limit. Junior shortstop Blake Beach (Atascocita, Texas) pounded a pair of home runs during a three-for-four, three-runs scored night; sophomore designated hitter Nolan Scherencel (Arlington, Texas) had a memorable evening with a home run among four hits and four RBI; and sophomore outfielder Casey Turner (Kingwood, Texas) launched a home run as part of a two-hit, two-RBI outing to spotlight the Maroon and White's attack.

McMurry (11-13 overall, 6-7 ASC) continues its weekend series against the Tigers with a doubleheader Saturday, April 1. Start time is 1 p.m. at Walt Driggers Field.
