Box Score McMurry University got a gigantic monkey off its back in a game with Concordia University Saturday, Oct. 21 in Kimbrell Arena.
The Lady War Hawks used huge runs in the first and last sets to win 25-23, 25-21, 25-17 for their first American Southwest Conference victory this season. McMurry outscored the visitors 12-1 at the end of the first stanza and went on an 11-1 tear in the middle of the third.
The hosts exerted their dominance with seven total blocks. Senior middle/right side hitter Addyson Tiffin (Bushland, Texas) and junior outside/right side hitter Jennika Willis (Abilene, Texas) each blocked two shots, and combined for five block attempts.
McMurry had 39 kills with Willis having 10, freshman outside hitter Zoe Aldrich (Fredericksburg, Texas) adding nine and junior outside hitter Jacee Dinkins (Azle, Texas) contributing eight. Freshman setter/defensive specialist Erin Fallon (Boerne, Texas) had 19 of the team's 36 assists, and junior setter Ashlyn Quillan (Van Alstyne, Texas) added to her record-setting career with 10 assists. Quillan eclipsed the 1,000-career assist mark Friday night in the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor game.
Senior defensive specialist/libero Adile Leal (Clute, Texas) had 23 of the team's 72 digs. Also in double figures were junior defensive specialist/libero Hannah Page (Lubbock, Texas) with 13 and Fallon with 11.
Saturday's win was payback after McMurry lost in five sets at Concordia a month ago.
The Lady War Hawks have had a tough season, getting their only other win in early September in non-conference action.
McMurry looks to build on its momentum Oct. 24 when the Maroon and White goes across town to play Hardin-Simmons University at 6 p.m. The home finale is at noon Oct. 28 against LeTourneau University.
