ALPINE, TEXAS – A tough-luck 20 percent field goal shooting performance in the third period spelled trouble for McMurry University Saturday, Jan. 28.
Sul Ross State University managed to build a 20-point advantage at the end of the frame (69-49). Even with the 26-11 run on their side, the host Lobos nearly had the tables turned on them in the final quarter. As they have done throughout the 2022-23 campaign, head coach Drew Long's War Hawks kept on battling, closing to within as little as six points (80-74) during the last minute. SRSU managed to make the lead hold though toward an 84-76 final.
Concluding a .500 week in American Southwest Conference play, the Maroon, Black and White were led offensively by the triumvirate of freshman guard
Kylie Flippin (Wichita Falls, Texas), sophomore guard
Emily Holland (Mansfield, Texas), and freshman forward
Aryana Cleveland (San Antonio, Texas). Flippin, returning from an injury that had sidelined her for the last few weeks, popped in 16 points with a three-of-four effort from beyond the arc leading her afternoon. Holland ran a current string of double-digit finishes to seven with 15 points, and Cleveland tallied 12 points and was only one rebound short of a double-double.
McMurry (10-9 overall, 4-9 ASC) travels to UT-Dallas Thursday, Feb. 2. Game time at UTD's Activity Center is 5:30 p.m.
NOTES: Flippin's point total was her sixth double-figure game of the season … Senior guard
Taya Bridges (Mesquite, Texas) added a strong stat line with eight points, six assists, three blocked shots, two steals and six rebounds.
