AUSTIN, TEXAS – The legacy of high-point production in the McMurry University – Concordia University series resumed its theme Thursday, Jan. 12.
For the fourth time since the War Hawks and Tornados began their 45-game history, both sides posted 100-points-or-more in an American Southwest Conference battle that went into an extra session at CU's Fieldhouse. A back-and-forth affair that saw ten ties and seven lead changes wasn't finally decided until a long three-point attempt by head coach Zach Pickelman's squad rimmed out in the closing moments, allowing the hosts to escape with a 110-108 decision.
Seven of the nine scholar-athletes stepping on the floor in Maroon, White, and Black jerseys wound up posting double figures. Sophomore guard
Matt Pena (El Paso, Texas) led the attack with 20 points to highlight a night when he notched six personal bests for the 2022-23 campaign, including six made three-pointers in 37 minutes of action. Freshman forward
Elijah Lomas (San Antonio, Texas) and junior guard
Rob Charles (Houston, Texas) added to four War Hawks with 15 or more points. Coming off the bench, Lomas also merited six personal season-best marks, led by 18 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. Charles finished with 15 points, mainly due to hitting on all but one field goal attempt (six of seven).
Charles and Lomas combined for six of the team's final eight points to conclude regulation. Charles drilled a jumper with six seconds left to forge a 98-98 tie. After a missed three-pointer by Concordia, the two teams ventured into overtime. McMurry took a 99-98 lead on a free throw by Charles and appeared ready to take control before the Tornados reeled off a game-deciding eight-point run. Senior guard
Remy Minor (Chicago, Ill.), the final of the visitors' 15-points-or-more quadruplets, looked to add three more to his total with a running three-point attempt with five seconds left that hit the backboard and front of the rim and fell off to conclude overtime.
The War Hawks (4-10 overall, 3-4 ASC) clash with the University of Mary-Hardin-Baylor Saturday, Jan. 14. Game time at UMHB's Mayborn Campus Center is 3:30 p.m.
