Daniell, Smith win doubles in setback to Colorado College

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Tennis wrapped up non-conference play against Colorado College, falling 8-1 on the men's side and 9-0 on the women's side at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center in Abilene.

McMurry's lone point came at No. 1 doubles, as senior Chase Daniell and junior Reid Smith defeated Andrew Kaelin and Jack Delafield 8-4. Daniell ranks sixth on the all-time doubles wins list at McMurry with 42 career victories. He's also six wins away from the all-time top 10 for career combined wins.

Today's matches also served as the home finale.  


Men's Tennis: Colorado College 8, McMurry 1

After Smith and Daniell salvaged doubles with a win in the top flight, both went on to competitive singles matches. Daniell fell 6-3, 6-4 in the top spot, while Smith forced a tie-breaker at the No. 2 spot. Kaelin held on for a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 victory.

Connor Hogan also had a competitive battle in No. 3 singles, coming up short in a 6-4, 6-3 match.


Women's Tennis: Colorado College 9, McMurry 0

Despite no points Friday, the women's squad went to multiple tie-breakers and were close in the majority of its matches.

In No. 1 doubles, Hope Turner and Hannah DeFriend were edged 8-6 by Olivia Dicks and Maddy Meister. DeFriend and Meister went on to a barnburner in singles, with Meister earning a close 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 victory. The tie-breaker also ended close at 10-8.

In No. 2 doubles, Kaylin Parker and Bridgette Fly were clipped 8-7 by Malia Rivera and Gigi Jensen. Parker and Fly posted five points in the tie-breaker, but it was not enough. Parker went on to No. 5 singles against Romi Hodor, coming back from a 6-4 loss in set one to a 7-6 win in set two. Hodor earned the tie-breaker.

McKenzie Carroll came close at the No. 6 spot, falling 2-6, 6-7 to Malia Rivera.


On Deck

The War Hawks conclude the regular season with a match Saturday at Howard Payne. The match begins at 2 p.m. in Brownwood, Texas.
