ALPINE, Texas – McMurry Men's Tennis earned its first American Southwest Conference divisional win of the 2022 season Saturday in Alpine, Texas, sweeping through Sul Ross State for a 9-0 win.
The War Hawks (4-11, 1-1 ASC) never lost a point and involved a number of players across the board. Sul Ross State fell to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
"We had a few people come up to play this weekend," said McMurry head coach Chris Breaux. "Both the men and women played well to bring home another 9-0 victory on both sides."
McMurry's Ty Edwards pulled double duty and had a huge day, teaming up with Jason Cabe at No. 2 doubles and earning an 8-0 sweep for the team's first point. Jonathan Arzuaga and Kyle Smith finished off an 8-2 win in the third flight, followed by an 8-6 win by Chase Daniell and Trent Lewis in the top seed.
Dylan Bryant was the first to finish in singles action, defeating Branden Lewis with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Edwards then clinched the match at No. 4 singles, defeating Hugo Flores by a score of 6-2, 6-0.
Things got interesting at the top two singles spots, as Connor Hogan took down Jackson Taylor by a 6-1, 6-4 final in Flight 2, then Reid Smith defeated Kyle Villalon in the top spot by a 6-5, 6-2 final.
Arzuaga and Lewis rounded out the match with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
With today's sweep, McMurry has shut out the Lobos nine times since 2008. The War Hawks have also won 13 straight matches against SRSU in that span.
McMurry returns home for its next three matches, starting with West Division rival Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
