ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Baseball hosted Schreiner University in a non-conference showdown Tuesday, as the Mountaineers won a competitive game by a final of 13-8 at Walt Driggers Field.
Both teams took advantage of defensive miscues throughout the game, but Schreiner (6-4) added a few more hits and used three big innings to hang on to its lead before locking things up in the final two frames.
McMurry (7-10) had seven hits and remained in striking distance most of the way. The Mountaineers scored the first three runs in the second inning, then later took a 6-1 lead in the fourth. The War Hawks responded with four unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth to pull within one.
Schreiner, who remains unbeaten in road games, held onto its lead in the sixth then added four more in the seventh. McMurry answered with a three run inning to pull back within two at 10-8, but SU put it out of reach with three insurance runs.
Coming off a 6-for-12 weekend at LeTourneau, Josh Dyer led the War Hawks with two hits and four RBI on Tuesday. He hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, a two-RBI double to left center in the fifth inning, then drove home another with an RBI fielder's choice.
Dylan Abbott also had two hits on the day, while Nick Hamel, Blake Beach and Javier Rosa added one each. Hamel had the first hit with an early double.
McMurry will travel to Trinity (Texas) for its next regular season game, which takes place March 15 at 5 p.m. in San Antonio.
