ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Men's Tennis closed a three-game home stand with a statement win, erasing an eight-game skid with a perfect 9-0 sweep of Austin College on Sunday at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The War Hawks (3-11) never dropped a set in singles and avoided tiebreakers in doubles, cruising to their first victory over the 'Roos (1-8) since 2016.
The match started with a clean sweep at No. 1 doubles, as Chase Daniell and Reid Smith made quick work of Luke Henley and Tate Nelson with an 8-0 victory. Shortly after, Ty Edwards and Jason Cabe defeated AJ Wuested and Storm Simonin in No. 3 doubles.
The team of Connor Hogan and Dylan Bryant had a tougher road to victory, but took down Trey Salyer and William Dixon with an 8-6 victory in Flight 2.
In singles action, McMurry finished in order of seed, starting with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win by Daniell over Henley in the top flight. Smith and Nelson went at it on the second court, as Smith pulled out a 6-3, 6-4 win. Hogan finished behind them with a 6-1, 6-4 win.
In the next wave, Bryant started things out with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dixon. Cabe then cruised past Wueste with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. With all eyes on Flight 6, Jonathan Arzuaga finished off Simonin to secure the sweep, 6-3, 6-4.
McMurry hits the road for next week's conference matchup, taking on Sul Ross State on Saturday, April 2 at 2 p.m. in Alpine, Texas.
