SAN ANTONIO, Texas – McMurry Tennis faced tough competition this weekend with both programs falling to Texas Permian Basin and Trinity University this past weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
McMurry's men (2-9) lost 6-1 to Division II opponent UTPB, while the women (3-7) suffered a 7-0 sweep against the Falcons.
Both nationally ranked Trinity teams earned 9-0 marks against the War Hawks.
Claiming the lone point for McMurry was senior
Chase Daniell. Daniell defeated UTPB's Paul Schwieger at Flight 1 singles after claiming the first set, 6-1, and dropping set two, 0-6. Daniell refocused in the third set tiebreaker and powered his way to a 10-6 finish.
"We had two tough matchups on the road," said head coach
Chris Breaux. "We didn't come out on top as a team, but we had some good outings individually. We will continue to work hard in preparation for conference."
McMurry's men struggled to gain ground in singles play against both opponents. The War Hawks also suffered tough losses in all six doubles matchups as well.
Prior to his win at line-one singles, Daniell had teamed up with
Reid Smith for a close match at Flight 1 doubles. The pair fell by a 6-3 decision to UTPB's Patryk Kosinski and Hector Flores.
Smith and
Jonathan Arzuaga-Portugues also competed well against the Falcons but came up short in their respective singles matches by identical 6-3, 6-2 scores.
No. 8 Trinity men's tennis allowed four total points in all three doubles and won all six singles in straight sets.
On the women's side, junior
Hope Turner made things interesting in a battle at the top singles against the Falcon's Teodora Vrucan. Turner grabbed the first set 7-6 after a favorable 5-0 tiebreaker. Vrucan would then level the playing field with a 6-2 mark in the second set. In a competitive third set, the pair would battle to a 10-7 finish in favor of Vrucan.
The remaining singles were claimed in straight sets by the Falcons.
No. 24 Trinity women's tennis mimicked their men's efforts in singles play and dropped a total of five points in doubles play.
McMurry Tennis will have some time to recover as they head into spring break. The War Hawks will return to action with a home match on Friday, March 25 against Texas A&M - Texarkana. Match play is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
