KERRVILLE, Texas – McMurry Men's Tennis jump started the day with a 9-0 sweep against Texas Lutheran in Seguin, before dropping 6-1 to Schreiner in the nightcap in Kerrville.
The War Hawks (2-4) powered their way to a clean sweep in a pony play format against the Bulldogs (0-7), and claimed Flight 2 doubles against the Mountaineers (3-3).
"We were fresh against TLU and got off to a great start," said head coach
Chris Breaux. "The break in between didn't help us maintain the momentum, causing us to slightly lose focus once we got to Kerrville. Despite the loss against Schreiner, we looked good out there. We just have to battle through those tough matches, especially on doubleheader days like today."
Against TLU, duo
Chase Daniell and
Connor Hogan took down Simon Carandang and Aaron Salinas, 8-6, to claim Flight 1 doubles.
Reid Smith and
Dylan Bryant would earn a comfortable 8-3 victory at Flight 2 doubles over Hunter-Kemball Cook and Joshua Huang.
For the doubles sweep,
Ty Edwards and
Jason Cabe dominated at Flight 3, winning 8-2 against Dristan Weaver and Quinn Johnson.
Carrying the momentum into singles play, the War Hawks dropped only two total sets and ran away with a pair of decisive third-set encounters.
Hogan slipped in the second set of his Flight 3 singles but found himself in the driver seat in the final set, defeating Weaver 6-3, 5-7, 10-4.
Edwards fell just short in his second set against Johnson, but bounced back to earn the 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 win at Flight 6.
Daniell, Cabe, Smith and Bryant would earn wins in their respective singles matches with straight set performances.
Smith and Bryant owned the solo point for McMurry with the win at Flight 2 doubles against the Mountaineers. The pair beat Austin Cervantes and Quinten Robertson, 8-6.
Up next, McMurry will host a doubleheader matchup against non-conference opponent Oklahoma Wesleyan next Friday, March 4. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m. inside the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
