ABILENE, Texas – A tough outing for McMurry Tennis resulted in a loss for both programs against non-conference opponent Western New Mexico Friday evening at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The McMurry men (1-3) fell 9-0 to the Division II foe, while the women (2-3) fell 8-1.
"We had some good matches against a really tough team," said head coach
Chris Breaux. "We know we can compete and we plan to work on the things that held us back. I have confidence we can bounce back from this in the days to come."
Earning the tally for the women was last week's American Southwest Conference West Division Player of the Week
Bridgette Fly. Fly earned a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win at Flight 3 singles, defeating WNU's Andreea Arnautu.
Notable match play also came from both War Hawk pairings at Flight 1 doubles. Junior
Hope Turner and sophomore
Hannah DeFriend pushed their matchup to a tiebreaker but slipped in the end by a 8-7 (7-4) mark against Julia Terrazas and Massiel Paredes.
Seniors
Chase Daniell and
Connor Hogan challenged the Mustang's top duo in Jonathan Vega and Javier Romero, leading the Mustang pair by as much as 5-2. Unfortunately, the Mustangs were able to overcome the deficit for the comeback win, 8-6.
The War Hawks are back in action next weekend with trips to Schreiner and Texas Lutheran. First serve against SU is set for 4 p.m. Friday.
