Women's tennis grabs two wins on the road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MARSHALL, Texas – McMurry Women's Tennis notched back-to-back wins to close out its East Texas road swing, taking down LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist this past weekend. The War Hawks defeated LETU 6-3 on Saturday in Longview and added a 5-4 win against ETBU on Sunday in Marshall.

McMurry (2-2) claimed two doubles and clinched the match with the four singles against the YellowJackets (0-1). Against the Tigers (1-2), McMurry grabbed Flight 3 doubles and mimicked the LETU results in singles for its second win of the season.

"The girls fought hard to pull off the final four singles against LETU for the win," said head coach Chris Breaux. "We then saw a very competitive ETBU team on Sunday that forced us to play our best tennis once more. I was very happy with the way our ladies came together in the end. With grit and determination, they were able to get the job done."

Against LeTourneau, Emily Nuttall and Bridgette Fly would notch McMurry's first point on the day with a win at Flight 3 doubles. The duo took down Emma Boulanger and Clara Brisman, 8-3. At Flight 2 doubles, Hannah DeFriend and Kaylin Parker outlasted Bailey Deatherage and Brandy Weems, 8-4.

The War Hawks entered singles play with a 2-1 advantage but would slip at Flight 1 and 2 singles to give the YellowJackets an even playing field.

To reclaim the lead for McMurry, Fly grinded out a 6-3, 6-4 win against LETU's Megan LeBlanc.

Freshman Andrea Smith would follow suit and secure the McMurry win with her Flight 4 singles performance against Brandy Weems, 6-2, 6-1.

Nuttall added to the cause with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Clara Brisman at Flight 6, while Parker earned the final tally of the night in tie-breaker fashion against Boulanger, 0-6, 6-4 (10-7).

On Sunday, Nuttall and Smith teamed up to take Flight 3 doubles in a tough tie-breaker against ETBU's Kylee Mixon and Isabelle Duarte, 8-7 (7-4).

At No. 3 singles, Fly defeated Andrea Alvarez, 7-5, 6-1. Smith battled to a 6-4, 7-6 win over Duarte at Flight 4.

Parker secured Flight 5 with a 6-1, 6-4 mark, while McKenzie Carroll earned the winning point for McMurry with a comfortable 6-4, 6-0 win over ETBU's Keelie Stampson at Flight 6.

McMurry will host Western New Mexico on Friday, Feb. 18 for its next matchup. Match play is set to begin at 3 p.m. inside the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
