ABILENE, TEXAS – A red-hot shooting Sul Ross State University squad was the difference in American Southwest Conference action Thursday, Dec. 8.
McMurry University, despite digging a 23-9 hole late in the opening frame, managed to give its home fans inside Kimbrell Arena a chance to celebrate with a 10-2 stretch that brought them within less than 10 points in the second period. However, head coach Drew Long's crew wouldn't get any closer, as the Lobos' long-range weaponry was on display throughout the 40 minutes. The visitors answered the Maroon, Black, and White run with an 18-0 roll of their own and didn't look back towards a 79-63 decision.
Freshman guard Melody Martinez led the SRU with 25 points which included going four-of-six from beyond the arc. They also had a solid inside presence, with the junior Vania Hampton and sophomore Marley Rokas each compiling double-doubles.
For the War Hawks, who dropped to 7-2 overall and 1-2 in league play, sophomore guard
Emily Holland (Mansfield, Texas) extended her double-figure scoring streak to nine straight with 15 points. She also picked off a team-best two steals. Senior guard
Jada Morris (Forney, Texas) had a night to remember, compiling a personal single-game career-high 12 points to go with two assists. She hit four-of-seven from the field and was a perfect four-for-four from the charity stripe.
McMurry looks to rebound with a trip to Howard Payne University's Brownwood Coliseum in Brownwood, Texas, Saturday, Dec. 10. Game time against the YellowJackets is 1 p.m.
