FINAL FOUR BOUND – WAR HAWKS STAVE OFF UT-DALLAS

ABILENE, TEXAS – The defensive story of McMurry University's 2022 season continued to be written in the affirmative Tuesday, Nov. 1.

The fourth-seeded War Hawks, locked in a second tense battle with fifth-seeded UT-Dallas in five days, posted yet another 90-minute clean sheet in front of a partisan Maroon, Black and White crowd at Wilford Moore Stadium. Junior goalkeeper Priscella Caruso (Tomball, Texas) added to her single-season and career shutout records with her eighth and ninth such efforts.

Caruso kept three Comet shot on goal attempts out of harm's way. Meanwhile, on the offensive side of things, head coach Charles Nobles' squad kept plenty of pressure on their guests. Sophomore forward Emily Holland (Mansfield, Texas) and sophomore midfielder/forward Jae Portillo (Grand Prairie, Texas) made up a big share of the strikes with seven between them of which three were on frame. While none of their tries found the back of the net, freshman defender Katie Wilson (Liberty Hill, Texas) did with a high, twisting attempt that UT-Dallas goalkeeper Jade Press tried to pin up against the far post. The ball bounded away and into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage just over 20 minutes in.

Wilson's first game-winning score stood up over the final 70 minutes, sending the home crowd into euphoria and McMurry to the final four of the 2022 American Southwest Conference tournament. It was the program's second successive and third quarterfinal round victory in the last four seasons.

The War Hawks (8-5-4) move on to face top-seeded and regular season league champion Mary-Hardin-Baylor Thursday, Nov. 3, in one of two semifinals. Kickoff is 5 p.m. in Belton, Texas at UMHB Soccer Field.

NOTES: McMurry upped a red-hot current run of play to 6-2-1 with the home quarterfinal decision. Their defense has been touched for only four goals in the last 810-plus minutes which includes a run of four successive shutouts.
