BROWNWOOD, TEXAS – Four straight American Southwest Conference wins have only been half the story of a fantastic run for McMurry University.
Head coach
Charles Nobles' defense has been a picture of perfection over the last 383 minutes and 81 seconds. A 2-0 victory over league nearby rival Howard Payne University added 90 more minutes to that span Saturday, Oct. 15.
The War Hawks, climbing to 6-4-2 overall and 4-1 in loop action, held a slim 11-9 shots advantage on the host Yellow Jackets at Citizens National Soccer Park. Five of the visitors' tries were on frame, with freshman midfielder
Olivia Quintanilla (Burleson, Texas) striking the eventual match-winner, the second of her career, and in three days, in the 43
rd minute. In the second half's early stages, freshman midfielder
Alexis Lira (North Richland Hills, Texas) added a critical insurance score in the 64
th minute.
Quintanilla's goal would have been enough for the Maroon, Black and White back line. Junior goalkeeper
Priscella Caruso (Tomball, Texas) kept the Yellow Jackets scoreless with five saves. It was her fifth shutout of the year.
The War Hawks are set for a crucial set of road matches Thursday and Saturday, Oct. 20 and 22. They take on the University of Mary-Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas, on Thursday at 5 p.m. and Concordia University in Austin, Texas, on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Cru and Tornadoes are two of the three remaining unbeaten programs in league action.
