ABILENE, Texas - McMurry Tennis started its season against tough competition on opening weekend, as both the men's and women's programs dropped matchups against NCAA Division II opponent Midwestern State on Friday in Wichita Falls. On Saturday, the McMurry women fell short against St. Thomas (TX) at home at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The War Hawks fell by identical 7-0 score to the Mustangs, while the women lost 8-1 to the Celts.
"We had two tough season-opening matches," said head coach
Chris Breaux. "The positive thing is that we got to see what we need to work on moving forward. We now look to bounce back in the days to come."
Earning the lone point for the War Hawks was freshman
McKenzie Carroll, who defeated UST's Regina Lopez 6-0, 6-4 at Flight 6 singles.
Despite their final outcomes, notable match play also came from freshman
Andrea Smith at Flight 4 singles and junior
Emily Nuttall at Flight 5 singles. Smith worked her way to a second set tie-breaker against UST's Jenny Reynolds, while Nuttall would push UST's Karissa Guzman to a pair of 7-5 sets.
In doubles, sophomore duo
Hannah DeFriend and
Bridgette Fly challenged the Celts to the final point at Flight 2 doubles, falling in a tight 8-6 battle against Alyssa Davila and Jenny Reynolds.
Both programs return to action on Friday, Feb. 4 against Texas Wesleyan in Fort Worth, Texas. Match play is set to begin at 1 p.m.
