Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

War Hawks cruise past Celts, 4-0

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University held its women's soccer home opener in front of over 100 fans on Sunday afternoon and sent the crowd home happy with a dominant 4-0 shutout win over the University of St. Thomas (Texas) at Wilford Moore Stadium.

The War Hawks (1-1) were in the driver's seat the whole way, owning a 15-3 shot advantage with 11 shots on goal and six corner kicks. McMurry also played sound defense, making three saves with no corner kicks allowed in the shutout.

Today marked just the second all-time meeting between the programs, with McMurry leveling the series at one game apiece.

Freshman Ashlyn Pozorski opened the scoring with a goal in the 32nd minute, taking a pass from senior Meriah Sikora and coming out of the scrum with a point. The lead would hold through halftime, as UST (0-3) was limited to two shots.

The War Hawks poured it on in the second half, adding three insurance goals in a six-minute span. Senior Hallie Rutherford buried on in the 57th minute on an assist from Kate Holland, then was followed by back-to-back goals from freshman Emily Holland and sophomore Kylee Smith in the 61st and 62nd minutes, respectively.

Pozorski, Holland and Smith scored their first collegiate goals for McMurry.

Three goalies combined for the shutout with nearly equal minutes in net, starting with senior Brianna Monroe. Sophomore Cortlynn Boone entered to play 32 minutes to end the first half and start the second half, then fellow sophomore Priscella Caruso closed it out with 29 minutes of action. All three keepers had one save.

Getting everyone involved, 29 players entered for the War Hawks Sunday.

McMurry returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 9 in another Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) crossover as it travels to Southwestern University. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
