ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Soccer wrapped up non-conference games on Sunday afternoon, knocking off Texas Lutheran with a 2-0 shutout at Wilford Moore Stadium to extend its win streak to four games.
McMurry (5-2) played another defensively sound game Sunday, shutting out its fourth opponent of the season. The War Hawks now lead the American Southwest Conference in total shutouts and are one of three teams with less than one goal allowed per game at 0.83, joining Belhaven (0.67) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (0.25).
After a scoreless first half, the War Hawks struck gold with a goal from senior midfielder Meriah Sikora in the 58th minute. Her goal came on a pass from fellow senior Ashland Hansen. This would prove to be the game-winning goal.
The icing on the cake came three minutes later as sister duo Kate Holland and Emily Holland connected for the first time in their college career. Kate hooked one deep from the left side and found her younger sister Emily in the box, who flicked it past the keeper for the score.
The shutout came courtesy of the McMurry defense, anchored in net by the trio of Cortlynn Boone, Brianna Monroe and Priscella Caruso, respectively. All three shared nearly equal minutes in goal.
Emily Holland led with three shots on the day, including two on net, while Sikora also had two shots on target. Eleven players attempted at least one shot on the day, and 26 players entered the game for McMurry.
TLU (1-4) was unable to take a shot, as the War Hawks handled possession most of the way and took 14 shots with eight on goal. McMurry also took seven corner kicks without allowing one.
During halftime of today's game, McMurry Women's Soccer invited fans to join them in writing notes of encouragement to mail to members of the United States Navy. For the remainder of the season, McMurry will invite fans to write postcards at select games to mail to different branches of the military for encouragement.
The War Hawks begin conference play on Saturday, Sept. 25 with a road trip to Belhaven. Kickoff is set to begin at 11 a.m.
