KERRVILLE, Texas – McMurry University Men's Soccer Head Coach Marquis Muse earned his first win as War Hawks' head coach on Friday afternoon, as McMurry blanked Schreiner with a 1-0 shutout in Kerrville, Texas.
McMurry (1-2) played a very level first half, but had a bit more in the tank in the second half and found the net in the 63rd minute. Sophomore Santiago Nunez connected with freshman Preston Stal for the game-winning goal – the first of Stal's collegiate career.
Defensively, McMurry limited Schreiner (0-4) to just two shots on goal – both saved by true freshman keeper Orion Patterson in 90 minutes of shutout action. Veteran defenders Christian Bryant and Luis Lopez aided the efforts by playing all 90 minutes.
The War Hawks finished with a more efficient attack, taking 15 shots with eight shots on target. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers had 10 shots – five in each half – but were only able to put two on net.
Both teams had opportunities from the corner, with Schreiner taking seven and McMurry taking six.
McMurry has now shutout Schreiner in the last two meetings, including a 3-0 win in 2019.
The team will make its official home debut in Wilford Moore Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 12 as it welcomes Texas A&M - San Antonio for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
