ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Men's Tennis dominated against American Southwest Conference foe Sul Ross State, claiming the matchup, 8-1, Friday afternoon at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks are now (4-6, 1-0 ASC) while the Lobos fall to (0-6, 0-3 ASC) on the year.
The War Hawks dropped only one singles match and swept the Lobos in doubles play.
Doubles pair
Dylan Bryant and
Trey Fambrough tallied McMurry's first point on the day in a dominating 8-0 win in No. 3 doubles.
Duo
Connor Hogan and
Joseph Diaz followed with an 8-4 win in No. 2 doubles while tandem
Carlos Martinez and
Chase Daniell finished shortly after with an 8-3 win over SRSU's Jackson Taylor and Michael Mata in No. 1 doubles.
With a 3-0 lead heading into singles play, McMurry continued tacking on points in the win column, winning the next five points before dropping the final matchup to deter a complete sweep for the War Hawks.
Martinez, Daniell and Hogan all won their respective singles matches by score of 6-1, 6-0 while Settles earned No. 6 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-2.
Despite the loss in No. 5 singles,
Matthew Santos pushed the bout to the end in hopes of claiming the complete sweep over the Lobos. Santos snagged the first set, 6-4, however, SRSU's Johnathan Rivas would earn the second set, 6-3, to force a tie-breaker. Santos would hit the eight-point mark before Rivas was able to put away the game to avoid the sweep by McMurry.
The War Hawks look to continue adding to the win column as they will head to Belton, Texas on Saturday, April 10 for a matchup against Mary Hardin-Baylor. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
